Club Critics' Picks Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
Grace Potter and her backing quartet The Nocturnals have spent much of the last five years opening for jam bands, which is...less reflective of a tendency toward meandering arrangements than sympathy for a similar musical era. At heart, Potter's a soul-soaked belter in the mold of Janis Joplin, helming a funky organ-driven blues-rock combo. While they've demonstrated a predilection for loose-limbed grooves, the boogie's less likely to luxuriate than curl around Potter's sultry alto as it shimmies and shakes. Potter seems less effective selling sad than saucy, which tends to keep the tempos surging. Though based in Vermont, they've always possessed a grimy Southern-soaked rock aspect that made them natural openers for The Black Crowes a few years ago. After an abortive attempt to record with T-Bone Burnett and a couple of lineup changes, Potter & Co. are ready to drop their fourth, self-titled release on June 8. — Chris Parker...
